Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) announced that it has signed a contract with Diehl Defence for development work to adapt the IRIS-T SLM air defense system…
Under the contract, the system is intended to be made mission-ready aboard the F125-class frigates in the German Navy’s inventory.
The work aims to fully integrate the IRIS-T SLM into the existing architecture of the F125-class frigates and to bring the system’s operational capabilities to their maximum level.
Integrating the IRIS-T SLM into the F125 class is intended to increase the German Navy’s capacity to defend against air and missile threats.
A medium-range air defense system, the IRIS-T SLM has an effective intercept range of up to 40 kilometers and an altitude coverage of 20 kilometers, and its imaging infrared seeker and thrust vector control provide high maneuverability.
The F125-class frigates measure 149.5 meters in length, displace approximately 7,200 tons, and have a maximum speed of 26 knots, with a range of approximately 4,000 nautical miles.
Developed by Diehl Defence, the ship-based IRIS-T SLM was operated through the anti-air warfare (AAW) module integrated into Deck C of the F125-class frigate, and the first successful firing of an IRIS-T family missile from a naval platform marked an important milestone…
