With the modification, the total value of the contract has risen from approximately $1.64 billion to $2.36 billion.
Under the modification, Lockheed Martin will deliver Aegis Combat Systems to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for the ASEV 1 and ASEV 2 platforms, in line with FMS program requirements.
Work under the contract is planned to be carried out between 2026 and 2030. The Japanese Aegis System Equipped Vessel (ASEV) program covers two new Aegis-equipped destroyers developed to strengthen the country’s ballistic missile defense capability.
Compared with existing Aegis destroyers, the ASEV will offer enhanced ballistic missile defense (BMD) capability and is being designed to allow the integration of future capabilities against hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs).
