Lockheed Martin has begun work on a new missile designed to double the range of the GMLRS system while being launched from the same launcher.

The new munition is included in a $3 billion production contract awarded by the U.S. Army alongside the current GMLRS.

The GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) is a precision-guided, surface-to-surface rocket system launched from HIMARS and M270 family launchers.

Capable of operating in all weather conditions, the system is designed for precision strikes against point targets and engagements against area targets, with a range of 70 kilometers.

GMLRS rockets are approximately 3.96 meters long, have a diameter of 227 mm, and carry a warhead weighing approximately 90 kg.
