Switzerland has announced that it is seeking an alternative air defense system due to delays and cost increases in the procurement of Patriot air defense systems…
Switzerland is considering the Israeli-developed Barak MX and the SAMP/T NG system developed by the Franco-Italian consortium Eurosam as potential alternatives.
Switzerland considers that delivery of the five Patriot air defense systems, ordered in 2022 for CHF 2.3 billion, could be delayed by five to seven years due to changes in US procurement priorities, potentially leading to higher costs.
Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Barak MX is a modular air and missile defense system designed to counter aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles.
The system can use Barak SR, MR, LR, and ER interceptor missiles with ranges of 15, 35, 70, and 150 kilometers, respectively, to engage different types of threats.
Thanks to its open architecture, Barak MX can be integrated with different radars, sensors, and command-and-control systems, and configured for both land-based and naval operations.
SAMP/T NG is a next-generation air and missile defense system designed to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

The system uses ASTER 30 B1 and next-generation ASTER 30 B1NT interceptor missiles, with the B1NT variant offering enhanced capabilities against more advanced ballistic missile threats.
Configurable with the Ground Fire 300 (GF300) radar developed by Thales or Leonardo’s Kronos Grand Mobile High Power radar, SAMP/T NG provides 360-degree coverage and a radar detection range of more than 350 kilometers against aerodynamic targets…
