Anduril Industries announced that it has developed Steelfin, a family of surface-to-air missiles designed to counter cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic threats…
Steelfin is built on a common two-stage architecture that lets different missiles share components and production processes. Anduril is aiming for a much lower cost than comparable interceptors in every mission class.
Steelfin consists of a first-stage booster rocket motor and a second-stage terminal interceptor.
Its first stage can be fitted with different solid rocket motors and tailored to requirements such as range, performance, launch configuration, and packing density in launchers.
In the terminal stage, the family uses a common airframe, avionics, software, flight control systems, and interfaces.
Modular subsystem connections allow different seekers and mission equipment to be integrated without redesigning the whole missile.
Steelfin variants are expected to cover missions ranging from point defense to the low-altitude layers of integrated air and missile defense and upper-tier ballistic missile defense.
They are compatible with the M903A2 launcher, the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS), the Typhon system, and container-type launch systems now under development.
Steelfin is planned to be integrated into fire control software already in use, including Aegis and the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS)…
