Leonardo Begins Initial Production of cxMHR Air Defense Radar

Leonardo DRS announced that it has begun initial production of the cxMHR air defense radar…

The system is designed to detect and track missiles, rockets, and unmanned aerial vehicles to protect deployed forces and fixed sites.

Known as the C-Band Extended Multi-Mission Hemispheric Radar, it is a fully digital, software-defined radar that uses active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology.

Its four radar panels provide continuous 360-degree hemispheric coverage, enabling the system to detect and track aerial threats approaching from any direction.

The radar can simultaneously detect, track, and identify multiple air threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, rockets, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Detection range exceeds 90 kilometers against unmanned aerial vehicles and loitering munitions and exceeds 330 kilometers against transport aircraft.

The radar panels, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) equipment, command-and-control functions, and support equipment are integrated into a single containerized system.

To deliver fire-control-quality track data and rapid target updates, cxMHR uses artificial intelligence-enabled tracking and classification technologies.

Its software-defined architecture was developed in line with Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) standards to support integration into broader air and missile defense networks…
