Poland Launches ORP Wicher First Miecznik-Class Frigate!

Poland has announced the launch of the ORP Wicher, the first of three Miecznik-class (Arrowhead-140PL) frigates being built for the Polish Navy…

The ORP Wicher is scheduled for delivery to the Polish Navy in 2030 and is expected to enter service thereafter.

Miecznik-class frigates have an overall length of 138.7 meters, a beam of 19.7 meters, and a maximum displacement of approximately 7,000 tons.

The Miecznik class is designed to conduct high-intensity air defense, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare operations for the Polish Navy.

The vessels’ air defense capability will be centered around four 8-cell Mk.41 Vertical Launch Systems (VLS).

By using quad-pack missile launchers within the VLS cells, the frigates are planned to carry 128 Sea Ceptor (CAMM) air defense missiles.

For anti-surface warfare, the vessels will be equipped with eight RBS-15 Mk.3E anti-ship missiles, while the design allows for the future integration of eight additional missile launchers.

The frigates will be equipped with a 76mm Super Rapido naval gun, which will operate with the Strales fire-control system and provide point-defense capability against aerial targets using DART guided ammunition.

For anti-submarine warfare, the vessels will be equipped with two 324mm torpedo tubes, which will form a key component of the frigates’ capability to engage submarine targets.
