Under the €3.9 billion program, the FREMM EVO frigates are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2030.
Funding for the three vessels will be provided through the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) mechanism.
The FREMM EVO configuration, originally developed for the Italian Navy, features a cyber-resilient platform management system, the SADOC 4 combat management system, next-generation electronic warfare suites, and AESA radars operating in both X and C bands.
These sensors are designed to enhance the frigates’ air defense capabilities by detecting and tracking various aerial threats, including tactical ballistic missiles.
The frigates will also be equipped with advanced sonar, upgraded communications infrastructure and data links, counter-UAV systems, and the capability to control unmanned air, surface, and underwater vehicles.
The specific mission fit for the Portuguese vessels—including the final selection of radars, sonars, missiles, naval guns, and electronic warfare suites—has yet to be disclosed.
