The contract forms part of an ongoing contract program for the modernization of the tracked precision fire-support platform.
The modernization is intended to preserve the M270 system’s role on the battlefield and to integrate it more closely with the U.S. Army’s evolving fire-support architecture.
The M270A2 is configured to operate alongside HIMARS, joint force elements, and allied systems, and will not be employed as a standalone platform.
The M270A2 modernization program includes a new engine, an Improved Armored Cab, and a Common Fire Control System.
