The U.S. Navy has announced that it has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract to integrate the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor with the Aegis Weapon System and Mk 41 Vertical Launching System…
The U.S. Navy aims to field the interceptor by 2029, with a land-based flight test planned for 2027, followed by shipboard flight tests in 2028.
As part of the integration effort, a new launch canister compatible with the Mk 41 system, fire-control software and a data link are being developed.
The naval variant is being developed to retain the maneuverability and reliability of the existing PAC-3 MSE interceptor.
PAC-3 MSE is an interceptor developed by Lockheed Martin to engage aerial threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic missiles and aircraft.
Using hit-to-kill technology, the interceptor destroys targets through kinetic energy upon impact. Its dual-pulse solid-propellant rocket motor provides greater range and higher-altitude interception capabilities compared with earlier PAC-3 variants.
Under the U.S. Navy’s program, PAC-3 MSE is intended to be integrated with the Aegis Weapon System and Mk 41 Vertical Launching System for deployment aboard warships…
