Naval Group Begins Construction of First Swedish FDI Frigate

The contract signed between Sweden and Naval Group is valued at a total of €4.3 billion and covers the construction of 4 FDI-class frigates for the Swedish Navy.

The first frigate is planned for delivery in 2030, with the remaining 3 to be delivered to the Swedish Navy by 2034.

Being developed as a multi-mission frigate, the French Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention (FDI) displaces approximately 4,500 tons.

The platform is designed to perform air defense, surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare missions.

Developed for Sweden, the Luleå-class FDI frigates will have a displacement of approximately 4,500 tons, a length of 122 meters, and a maximum speed of 27 knots, and will be configured to carry out air defense, surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare missions on a single platform.

Armament will include Aster 30 and CAMM-ER air defense missiles, along with the Swedish-developed RBS15 anti-ship missile, Torped 47 torpedoes, 57 mm and 40 mm naval guns, and Trackfire remote weapon stations.

The sensor and electronic warfare suite will feature the Sea Fire fixed-panel AESA radar, the Giraffe 1X surveillance radar, and advanced sonar systems, as well as digital electronic warfare systems…
