Brazil Postpones Nuclear-Powered Submarine to 2038!

The Brazilian Navy has announced that it has revised the launch date for the nuclear-powered Álvaro Alberto submarine, which is equipped with conventional weapons under the PROSUB program, from 2034 to 2038…

The primary reasons cited for the revision are funding shortages and unpredictability in long-term financial resource planning.

The PROSUB program encompasses the construction of four Riachuelo-class diesel-electric submarines and the development of the Álvaro Alberto nuclear-powered submarine.

Currently, the Riachuelo is undergoing scheduled maintenance, while the Humaitá and Tonelero are in active service.

The fourth platform, the submarine Almirante Karam, is planned to be commissioned into the Brazilian Navy inventory in 2027.

The SN-BR Álvaro Alberto is the first nuclear-powered attack submarine equipped with conventional weapons developed by the Brazilian Navy under the PROSUB (Submarine Development Program).

The platform, which will be 100 meters long with a 6,000-ton submerged displacement, is being built entirely by Brazil, and its nuclear propulsion system is being developed under the Brazilian Navy’s Nuclear Program.

The reactor is centered around a pressurized water reactor (PWR)-based propulsion system and constitutes the most critical technological component of the platform…
