The potential procurement is intended to strengthen anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, including submarine detection and tracking, while enhancing maritime surveillance across vast areas of the Mediterranean.
While discussions remain ongoing, the procurement cost of the P-8A platform is considered high for Israel. The process could gain momentum if the acquisition is incorporated into a broader U.S.-Israel defense cooperation agreement.
The P-8A Poseidon is designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and search-and-rescue operations. Its high operational radius and endurance allow for continuous monitoring of vast maritime areas and effective tracking of underwater activity.
The aircraft features a service ceiling of 12,500 meters, a ferry range exceeding 8,300 kilometers, a combat radius of over 2,200 kilometers, and the ability to remain on station for more than four hours.
The platform is equipped with the Raytheon AN/APY-10 multi-mode radar, which performs synthetic aperture radar (SAR), inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), periscope detection, and wide-area maritime surface search missions with high precision.
Additionally, the L3Harris WESCAM MX-20HD electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) system provides long-range target identification and tracking in day and night conditions.
For electronic support measures, the AN/ALQ-240 ESM system detects radar and electronic emissions for threat analysis. Its advanced acoustic sensor system can deploy and monitor up to 129 active and passive sonobuoys simultaneously for submarine detection and classification.
